Evaluative Essay

My topic is about evaluating the cat in the hat whether he is dominated by the id, ego, or superego. I think all throughout the story, he was dominated by his id, "evil side" until the very end. I say that at the end, the cat seem to get things right and cleaned up his mess that he made before leaving. Even though he completely destroys everything in the house and have it his way, he seems to take responsible at the end.

During the beginning of the book, the cat comes inside the narrator and sally's home. He was child-like and only wanted to have fun. Of course everyone wants to have fun, but he took fun and turns it into a mess. During part of the beginning he plays with the fish and tries to balance more stuff with the fish on top of the entire thing. The results of that was he drop the fish into a pot which the fish complain how he's not suppose to be here when their mom was out. During this time, my view of the cat was bad which classified him into the id personality and the fish his opposite or the good one (superego).

In the middle of the story, the cat seems to stay in the id personality. He seems to be having more fun by letting out thing 1 and thing 2. Next, thing 1 and 2 seem to trash the whole house and mess around with the fish while the narrator and Sally standby to watch. The cat doesn't even seem to care about what the narrator or Sally thinks about him and getting the house mess. But after the narrator capture thing 1 and thing 2 and told the cat to go away. The fish's word has no effect on the cat since the fish being so demanding and also try to make the cat feel guilty of what he done to the house.

At the end of the story I think that the cat turn around and became a somewhat responsible and clean up the mess he made. At this point my view of him was somewhat good which classified him in the superego personality. He was naughty and child-like during the beginning and middle, but at the end he seems to be a little responsible and clean up after himself.

What made him change from id to superego personality maybe because of the narrator and Sally feelings or punishments they will get if he leave the house a mess and their mom come in seeing what the cat did, and would probably blame both of them. This maybe why he decided to change and be responsible.

My view of the Cat is that he was dominated by is id personality, and then at the end, he seem to be more of the superego personality by cleaning up after himself and fixing the house. This makes me suggest that this is what dominates the cat throughout the story.

Question 7: In the book, the girls will make fun of everything they could, for example when they made the face cover for the soldiers to wear. Having fun was another thing, the girls would have fun by decorating the room with toilet paper. What made me laugh during some part of the story was that how they do silly things like playing the torture game. I also laugh at pictures that seem funny to me like the part where Marji's mother told her that she was going to pin her ear to the wall. I think that adding comic relief or other funny pictures make the reader think that having fun can still happen during a time of hardship. Question 9: I think that they do this because of their wants and interests. Because whatever we want badly, we will do ANYTHING for it or as much as we can to get it. I totally agree that in this environment, I would possibly do the same thing to get what I wanted. In my life I have never experience the act of rebellion or doing it, but I have heard many stories of it. Satrapi is just a normal kid like I am. We have interests, friends, and things we valued. Question 5: I think that the writer voice sound like a child who seem to wonder about everything that is around her, but when she became a teen, she seem to understand more and is more mature than before. For me, I think that both of Marji's character of her childhood and teen are likable to me. Because it seem to me that her ideas and actions are what I sometime think and do as a child. My reaction of the little girl life doesn't affect me much in my reading, but instead it make me think more about my life and how the world is today.

Persepolis Blog 1

Question 2: I think that the book, Persepolis is already powerful since it is base on the author experience. I say this because many/ most of the graphic novel today are fiction. This is actually the first memoir I have read that is a graphic novel. The benefit of a memoir is that this has happen to someone and is base of their life experience. This way we could relate their experiences to ours and events that we hear or see throughout our life time. I would like to say that being a graphic novel also gives us the benefit to see that is going on the story. Since everyone is not the same, we all have a different idea or picture in our head that the author might be telling. Because Persepolis is a graphic novel, everyone who read this book will understand what they author is getting at and what is being read. Question 1: I think that this genre is so popular because it is unique since most that are read is "word book". Not many stories that I read is a graphic novel that is base on life experience. I think that Satrapi chooses this format because most adult are reading big word book. Another reason is that she might want to open her idea and story to the young adults, teens, and children. Because we are experience new things in our life and most young adult like to read a comic/ graphic novel more than a big book with words. I haven't read any memoirs, but I would hope to enjoy more stories like Persepolis more often. Persepolis is pretty much like any other comic books. Most comic books don't have chapters, or sometime they only have continuous volumes to it. I would put this book in the memoir/ graphic novel section because of it format. Question 8: There is no freedom after the country turn into an Islamic republic. Women were discriminated, everyone was being controlled by the government, wars, and people wouldn't be allow to do whatever they like. Most of the people will make wine and alcohol, others will sell fake passports and other items that are not to be sold or allowed. Sometime at home, women could take off their head gear since there is no other man beside their husband. People would have to do everything secretly.

Information and Technology

Technology, we all use it all the time! I chose these pictures because it is what we use most of the time and want (sometime). IPhone are like the newest tech we have now days. There are like tons and tons of apps for iPhone that you can download. Games, Internet, books, info, you name it. Almost everything you need to know is in that phone (similar to the feed). Technology is becoming bigger, and giving us tons of information which we don't need to know most of the time. We use technology because we want to be entertain or to show off our new iPhone because what's the point of putting it in your pocket and admire how cool it is when there's no one there to say how cool your phone look. And of course, we all don't need to buy an iPhone because life would be so boring if everyone are like the people in Feed!

Mac vs PC, hummm which is better? Give us same info and all that, but how come as a society we can't decide what to use or buy ( PC! PC! PC! =p). In technology, there is always a competition. We want what's new, better, and cool. But sometime, that's not always true, we sometime want the things we need be simple in life.

Technology can be addicted. There are time when we spend hours and hours

searching the web. Technology can be useful, but using it too much can be a bad thing. What I trying to say is that technology is interesting and there a lot of things we want to know and see out there, but spending so much time looking for things on the net, could be bad for you.

My reason for choosing this theme is because it's easy due to the fact that I use technology all the time. I, myself experience the feeling of being addicted to technology over my lifetime as a kid. Being addicted to technology make me realize that it could make me feel sorry for myself and funny at the same time.

Blog 2 Prompts

1."Missing the Feed" What does this chapter say about corporation?

Titus talked about how the corporation controls everyone. Everything they think and feel is sent to the corporation to know what you need. Kind of weird that they seem to stalk how you think and feel toward whatever. The best part is that they're making MONEY off the people's ideas and feelings by selling it to other companies. I can't believe their ideas and feelings are worth something. "Corporation, oh they're so bad" Everybody knows they control everything and says they're not so great, but still use the feed. "It's a free country, it's a democracy, believe in the people, we can change things..." something doesn't seem right, oh yeah, the corporation own us all!

2. "We enter in a time of calamity" What does this mean?

Calamity mean misfortune/tragedy, so this quote is saying that society is in a time of tragedy. Well not all, maybe some that is against the feed. I totally agree with this quote. Why? Well first of all, they beat an OLD man to death because he hack the children's feed. And of course, they didn't even have a trial for killing the poor guy in public. Also, most of the people that have feed are rich. It like our society, there's the rich, middle class, and poor. The rich have all the well equipments on their feed, while the middle class & poor have fine or no feed at all. The feed control everything they think and feel, how could that not be a tragedy.

3. In the Chapter called Boring, why does Titus think the boat picture is boring? What does this say about Titus?

I'm guessing that he think it's boring because there no excitement to it because of boat is just sitting there doing nothing. It seem boring, but a picture is suppose to remind you of something you did or an important memory. I suppose Titus hasn't been on a boat because he never experiences the fun of going outdoors. For example, he admires a dump over a boat on a lake. I think this tell me that Titus is truly blind. He doesn't know the beauty of nature versus a smelly, polluted dump.

Prompt 1

*"We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck." How does this sentence set up the novel?

I think that this sentence give you an idea that Titus and his friends take everything for granted. They think that it is easy to get up to the moon in their time. Putting a man on the moon was a huge historical event for us, but it seems that it is just a place that they can just walk to and do whatever. Most people would want to fly to the moon and walk on it just to see how amazing it is, but instead Titus think it suck because they went there too many times. This reminds me of going to Valleyfair. Sometime people would travel to Minnesota just to see/ride on roller coaster at Valleyfair. Most of us who live here has been to Valleyfair, and think that it is boring since we go there every year.

*In what ways does this Spring Break on the Moon compare with what you envision when you think of Spring Break?

Spring Break on the Moon is similar to what I think of Spring Break, you party, drink, have fun with friends, and go wild like there's no tomorrow. Basically you party and have a great time with friends. But during Titus and his friends' Spring Break, they just completely think that it just suck because they're so bored and have nothing to do (which some of us are during Spring Break). They think that they're going to get wasted and party like wild with college kids, but instead they found themselves jumping on each other, going full speed onto the wall, and other stupidity things that others would think that they're stupid. It is just the same with ours, if not, my Spring Break. We/I think that we would do all these really cool and amazing, but in the end you even have time to do what you wanted to do during those 7 days.

*What is exactly the feed? What does it mean to resist the feed? Is there anything similar today, and in what ways might you (or other people you know) resist the feed? What are the advantage or disadvantage of having a feed?

The feed in the story is like a chip (computer chip) that is put into their head. It is like a computer, but instead you can access it in your head. To resist the feed, is to stay away from the feed. It FEEDS on you to use it. There are many things that is like the feed, for example drugs, internet, electronics, and other things that you are obsessed with. The advantages for having the feed is that it give you infomation, entertainments, and connections with friends and family. The disadvantages for the feed are that it can give you false information, annoying ads, and easily hack by hackers. The feed think for you, speak for you, and basically control you. I say this because everyone in the story almost has same interests/personalities such as Titus and his friends like to listened I'll Sex you In and watch Oh? Wow! Thing! Another example is that Quendy and Calista change their hair style whenever the feed tells them the newest hair style that every girl is having.
